4A Games last spoke about the upcoming Metro game in an update back in November 2020, saying that the company was committed to applying everything it had learned throughout its history while breaking new ground and delivering a story-driven single-player experience, while taking advantage of the latest advancements brought on by the 9th generation of home consoles. 4A Games went on to discuss multiplayer, acknowledging that this is often considered a “box-ticking exercise” while reassuring fans that it would not compromise on delivering the single-player experience they have come to expect from the company.

The latest update from 4A Games details the company’s experience since Ukraine was invaded by Russia on February 24, 2022, and how the war has affected the development of the next Metro game. The statement reiterates the strong political and anti-war message that the Metro series has carried, and describes how the themes of tyranny, conflict and oppression have become part of their daily lives. 4A games remains resolute and determined to overcome the ongoing difficulties of the “new normal” that it has found itself in, along with the rest of Ukraine. At least one member of the Metro Exodus development team has been killed in the conflict.
While 4A games did not have any major details to share about the upcoming Metro title, it announced that the software development kit used to develop Metro Exodus is now available for modders to use for free, which includes a full level from Exodus for players and modders to tear apart in the editor. Naturally, the Exodus SDK is not to be used for commercial purposes and is intended purely for the modding community to run wild with, perhaps even sharing their own vision of what the next Metro game could look like.
The ongoing war in Ukraine is certainly tragic, and fans of 4A Games and the Metro series doubtless understand that developing a game under such conditions is no easy feat. The new statement from the company is a welcome one, even if it doesn’t contain any major details around the upcoming Metro title. Fans can at least rest easy knowing that the developer is still committed to delivering a new entry into the franchise with the same level of detail and care that has made the Metro series one of the best rated franchises in the genre.
