The 49ers running back, who became a cult figure in San Francisco last preseason, announced his retirement from the NFL on Sunday. Hayne, in a statement released by the 49ers, said he plans to join the Fiji Rugby Sevens for the Olympics.

The 28-year-old Australian made a huge splash last preseason with several explosive plays. He made the team, but only had 23 carries for 79 total yards during the regular season. After being demoted to the practice squad in October, Hayne returned to the team for the final two regular season games.

But for a man who had never played football before last season, Hayne definitely left an impression. Here are some of those highlights from last preseason:
